Principal's Monthly Blog - School Dances

Hello Woodcreek! Welcome back from Spring Break!

While you’re out enjoying the much deserved sunshine in April we want you to think about how you might help us solve an ongoing problem at WHS. In a nutshell, we’re not completely satisfied about how our dances are going. There seems to be some disconnect between what the students want and what we’re able to deliver. The goal is to provide our students with a safe and entertaining evening where they can socialize and decompress from the myriad of teenage pressures. For the most part we believe we do that at all our dances.

The fundamental problems we face at our dances is, over the top, inappropriate dancing and drinking before coming to the dances. Lately, another issue has come up – inappropriate attire that is too revealing for a public high school dance. We believe the attire issue is connected to the inappropriate dancing issue as well. So, how do we go about addressing these concerns? We think we start by having a dialogue with parents and students. The first opportunity to discuss this issue and give us your feedback is our Woodcreek Open Forum meeting on April 16thfrom 6 – 7 PM in the library. Our student government representatives will work with us during the school day to get us a student perspective. In addition, we’ll work with our Site Council to add another layer of input.

Our goal in taking this issue on is to examine the possibility of blending both our Jr. Prom and the non-school sanctioned Senior Ball. At this point in time the Senior Ball is run by parents and students and is held off-site per district policy. The school and school district is not responsible for any of the activities associated with Senior Ball. We believe it’s time to provide students an option for a school run formal dance in both their junior and senior year. By combining the dances we believe we can increase the safety and security of our students. Again, let’s look back at the fundamental goal stated about our dances – to provide students with a safe and entertaining environment where they can decompress from teenage pressures.

Hope to see you on Monday, April 16that 6PM in the WHS library if you’d like to discuss and offer solutions
